World War 1 and the Role of Treaty of Versailles

Introduction

The aim of maintaining global peace is as old as the events of conflicts between two or more countries. Every country or nation on both individual or collective level realizes the importance of maintaining diplomatic relations with every other country in order to make sure that peace prevails for the current and future generations to come. However, there have still been heated arguments, cold wars and violent conflicts between two nations or countries. Moreover, at many occasions the ways adapted to prevent and avoid war becomes the very reason of conflicts. Similar circumstances occurred during the World War 1 when the factors that were praised for the end of the war turned out to be the factors of other conflicts.

Thesis Statement

Although, The Treaty of Versailles had a prominent role to play in preventing further continuation of World War 1. However, the treaty failed to provide long lasting peace. In fact, the treaty triggered several other controversies in the future.

Discussion

Started in the year 1914 and continued for duration of four years, the World War 1, was the first major and intense jolt to the idea of global peace. With Europe as its originating grounds, the war ended in the year 1918. Countless loss of lives and mass destruction throughout were the outcomes of the World War 1. The effects of the war, moreover, dwelt in the planet for many years to come (Adams, pp. 25).

Nationalism

The most important factor that triggered the conflicts before WW1 was the force of nationalism. An idea that involves the preference of an individual's loyalty to his nation over every other aspect. During the era of 1800's, for many in Europe who shared a common history, language and culture supported and promoted Nationalism. These individuals were having the misconception of seeing themselves as loyal and honorable members of a nation or national group. Moreover, the new powers including Italy and Germany were the products of nationalism that came in to being when many small states were amalgamated into one state.

On the other hand, the eastern European empires of Russia and Ottoman Turkey were also affected by nationalism. These empires enjoyed the rule over various national groups that struggled for achieving independence. The tension between various rival nationalists groups over the control of Balkan Peninsula was also a major trigger of the World War 1.

Before the World War 1 broke out, many European countries experienced a military build-up. Moreover, these military build-ups were supported by public as a result of Nationalism. Another way of describing the previous statement could be that Nationalism supports the use of force by a country to achieve its goal.

By 1800's, a naval force was developed by Germany, that was big enough to challenge and threat the British Navy. In response, Dreadnought was launched by the British in the year 1906.
