California Fiction: A reflection of the State History

Abstract

The piece of California fiction that I have selected for my research paper is by Walter Mosley, titled “Little Scarlet”. The research paper explains about the major happenings that are discussed by the author in his book as a mean of reflecting the California history. This book is a reflection of the California history in a manner that it highlights the legislative practices of the times when the Puritans were having a rule in the society. The laws they had, and the way they follow them puts great stress on the community to read the past and try not to repeat similar mistakes in the future. The paper also provide an analysis from a number of chapters of this book, and in the conclusion, an explanation is given related to the way the Mosley's book is a tool for understanding the past.

Introduction

An informative and narrative work that deals with the nonfactual but imagery information and details is regarded as fiction. It means the characters in the fiction story are created by the author. It is considered as one of the pivotal branch of literary work, it may also include a number of other aspects. A line of difference between fiction and nonfiction is that the fiction stories deals with the factual events, observations like histories of different countries, and biographies of famous personalities. One of the fundamental elements of fiction is the element of characterization. A character is considered as a participant in the theme, and usually a person or plays this role. This book serves as the best example of the California history reflecting about the themes of injustice and cruelty that were marking the history of such a state. Mosley started his career at the age of thirty-four, and after that spends major part of his life in writing. He was known for his crime fiction. []

During the year 1992, Bill Clinton, then-presidential candidate, named him as one of his favourite novelists and that serves as a point of Fame of Mosley. “His first published book, “Devil in a Blue Dress,” was the basis of a 1995 movie starring Denzel Washington.
