Abstract

Human Sex Trafficking is a form of cruel modern-day slavery which is taking place at an enormous scale while the gravity of situation has yet to receive much required attentions of the policy makers and general public. Categorizing it as international problem would be wrong because it has become a local issue for our country. The purpose of this report is to highlight the issue of human sex trafficking in general and in the context of US in particular. The report will endeavor to discuss various issues associated so that a meaningful conclusion can be drawn out.

Introduction

When we talk about modern day slavery, Human sex trafficking is indeed the most common form in the debate of human rights violations. Even the rough figures of victims both domestic and international victims will start in millions, while the greater proportion of this figure is formed by children and females who are exploited in the commercial sex industry while either very little or in most cases no money is offered. The sex slavery and terms human trafficking frequently invokes images of girls (in adolescence) abused and even beaten in distant places, like Asia, Africa or Eastern Europe. However, as a matter of fact, human sex trafficking takes place locally in towns as well as metropolis large or small, right in citizens' backyards all over the United States. Realizing the enormity of the situation calls for through understanding of natty gritty of this issue. Furthermore, people should be competent to spot the sufferers in common situations of sex trafficking.

Thesis Statement

Human Sex Trafficking is fastest growing crime in the country and steps must be taken to cease this horrible crime at all costs.

Discussion

Human sex trafficking is a serious concern at international level. Unfortunately, situation is even critical in our country. The USA, on one side, faces an influx of victims coming from all over the world, on the other side, sexual abuse of minors is very common which is homegrown problem. Even though, full research is lacking which can give exact figure of child victims in the country, an estimated 293,000 American youths at present are vulnerable to commercial sexual exploitation. One research shows that huge portion of these children is thrown-away or runaway youths who reside on streets and eventually fell in the horrible trap of prostitution.

Human Trafficking

The term ?trafficking was defined at a global conference held by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Geneva in October, 1994. At this conference, it was concluded that if a migratory movement involves the following conditions, it will be considered trafficking.

A facilitator (trafficker) is involved.

Money (or another form of payment) changes hands.

An international border is crossed illegally.

The movement is voluntary. (IOM, 1994, 2)

This definition did not include any specific reference to exploitation and was similar to the definition of human smuggling. Moreover, human trafficking does not have to be a cross border movement; it can take place within the borders ...
