Being a Leader

Introduction

To be a leader in an industry is not an easy task as one has to be highly responsible and responsive to the environment and social norms and values of the state in which the business is flourishing. Leadership is getting quite complex due exceeding ethical considerations and globalization. An organisation cannot become a leader in any of the industry until and unless it is morally and socially responsible. This is the main motive of the corporate social responsibility that every organisation has to manage. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a kind of corporate conscience that is integrated into the model of business. The policy of CSR is based on self regulating system that helps an organisation in monitoring and ensuring compliance to the ethical standards, state laws and international norms and ethics. Every organisation within an industry needs to embrace CSR principles in all its activities and it should have positive impact on overall environment, employees, society and stakeholders (Bulkeley, 2001, pp.447). The leaders should not be leaders in respect to the revenues they generate but they should also be socially responsible to the society and should contribute actively to the society. This paper helps in highlighting the evil problem that was faced by people of Nigeria due to the oil spill in the Atlantic Ocean by Shell Oil Company, which is a leader in oil industry.

Discussion

It was found that people of Nigeria were not aware of this oil spill till they were not informed by the United States of America. This was totally an unethical attempt being done by Shell Company as they were putting life of humans as well as the sea creatures in danger. It is found from the research that once another oil producing company was forced by United States to compensate an amount of $20 billion for spilling oil into the ocean. So, United States want Shell Oil Company to compensate people of Nigeria for their cruel act.

Control

This issues needs to be controlled if Shell want to remain a leader in oil industry as it is totally unethical to make the lives of people in danger and even earn from it. Shell Company should strictly follow corporate social responsibility and make it as their code of conduct. This will definitely help them in overcoming the social issues that it is currently facing due to it unethical step. One thing should be very clear to all the organisations that if they want to become a market leader and maximise their revenues then they should work be very responsive to the society. It is their social responsibility to have good impact on the society rather than creating trouble for the inhabitant of the society (Bulkeley, 2001, pp.432). The spilling of oil is not any minor issue it can ruin the lives of large number of living creatures.
