The Impact of the Highly Improbable & The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in Business

Chapter 4

Malcolm's book called Blink which is the power of thinking without thinking is said to be an enlightening book for the readers. He states that based on thin slicing decisions that are made in split second based on high quality information available can be as good as decisions made rationally. He states that our subconscious is more powerful than our conscious. He also states that external factors that tend to impact our decision making can be rendered via mastering thin slicing. He says that thin slicing can aid us in focusing on the task that is at hand and also permit us to see the components of a situation which generally we don't focus upon however snap judgments cannot be always right based on prejudice. He said that we are also impacted by the facial expressions. He studied and conducted experiments which stated that expressions can have an impact on the emotions. Facial expressions can be thin sliced to read a person at a tangible and an intangible level. He states that stereotyping with respect to associating positive work's with white people and negative words with black people exist. If these are also thin sliced then racism wouldn't exist. He also states that 12 jury members watching the suspected can also change the decision of the jury because of society messages that one gets. The accused should be placed in a room and then his verdict should be taken (www.serendip.brynmawr.edu).

At a personal level I prefer to make rational decisions by making sure that I explore the brighter and the darker side of it. I analyze the strengths and weaknesses of a situation regardless of the perception I have about it to avoid biasness. Then I check upon the opportunities and threats of the decision options that I have. After identifying the feasibility of the types of decisions that can be taken I take a decision.

Based on what Gladwell states that subjective judgment is required to understand the whole situation is true. It is because of the fact that before any match starts regardless of the sport it deals with when Team A gets to know that Team B who has a winning streak in all the matches since the past few tournaments is to be faced; It will have an impact on Team A in terms of pressure regardless of the fact that Team A has never played with them and secondly Team A might have an edge over Team B in terms of competency levels. Similarly in the case of Shane, he is said to be an effective player. If not scoring then defending this is a well known fact. So subjectively speaking Shane should be judged on subjective matters as well (www.consultingwithinreach.com).
