Exercise 3: A Research Task

3A: Media Influences on Our Society

Media is present in various forms like television, internet, radio, newspapers, movies, electronic games and also plays. Media provides information, entertainment, education and also infotainment to the audiences. For every individual the version of recreation, entertainment and the information is different. Our society's culture is reflected in the television and movies. Many films and television program shows happenings of from our normal daily lives. It also shapes up our culture as people learn new things from the media and adopt those which they think is good and appropriate. Different trends of cultures are altered or amended through the media (Fedorov, 2010, 56).

Different entertainment versions of people, exhibit more violence as compared to the past recreational forms for instance; grand theft auto, gladiatorial games. In the electronic games, when aggressive reactions are rewarded and are not penalized, the chances of copying those violent behaviors are increased. Electronic games are different from other kinds of media as they are repetitive, interactional.

Due to the television, movies and electronic games, the interactions between families have decreased. Parents use these electronic devices as a babysitter to keep the children busy while they continue with their work uninterrupted. Those children who do have a proper interaction with their parents are less likely to become aggressive as the child get to spend quality time with his family (Anderson & Bushman, 2001, 56). The graphic details, gory scenes, virtual sex, portrayal of criminal behavior and inappropriate materials in the movies and games have been a centre of many debates. Such games and movies have been linked with the addictive and aggressive behaviors. The violent video games and movies exposure results in the increment in aggressiveness and that these exposures correlate with aggressiveness in the real life.

3B: Aim and Methodology of FASS Research

This article selected for analysis is, “Peer counseling in a culturally specific adolescent pregnancy prevention program” by Stephanie L. Ferguson. In this research article, the author has evaluated the peer counseling impact on prevention programs of adolescent pregnancy for females of African American region. Ferguson has obtained the statistics by conducting a pretest and post-test comparison and experimental designs. These tests are conducted from a sample of 63 African American adolescent females aged from 12 to 16(Ferguson, 1998, 34). Significant descriptive tests and data about the females who received peer counseling did not become pregnant within the intervention period of three months. The statistical significance increased by the findings of self-related topics and reproductive knowledge amongst the experimental group when the pretest and post-tests were compared.

The author has performed a statistical analysis by including different tables regarding the data of the research. A randomized pretest and multiple posttest experimental and comparison group design was used to evaluate the effects of peer counseling in an eight-week, culturally specific adolescent pregnancy prevention program for African American females (DiClemente, 1990, ...
