Cultural Empowerment

Cultural empowerment could be indicated as a tool to reduce the domestic violence behavior in the communities. Empowerment at individual and communal level could help to reduce the habits of tobacco, drug addiction and alcohol among young Native Americans. It might be observed that the members of the selected group would need time to come out of the deep rooted traditions and cultural handcuffs (Anderson, 2000).

Majority of the community members have been valuing their tradition and cultural values that might be the reason that they will need time to distinguish between the negative and positive aspects of few old fashioned cultures that have become the cause of unethical behavior and increasing health issues in the community members (Jones, 2008).

PEN-3 Model's Three Factors of Cultural Empowerment

Collins Airhihenbuwa's PEN-3 Model is a theoretical framework that places a social issue within a cultural context in order to guide health education and interventions. The three primary domains cultural identity, relationships and cultural empowerment are applied to the session group (Bray & Bouchard, 2004).

Cultural Identify

Cultural identity of the Native American seems to be dominated by the Indian culture and values where a little freedom and empowerment is passed on to individuals to live a happy life. In their culture, family and blood relations are given prior importance, and they have an impact on their life and related issues. It is observed that they have to stick to their values and beliefs and recognize their cultural identify as the legitimate (Bachman, 1992).
