Discipline of Environmental Psychology

It is essential to know the behavior of people and the environment are factors that influence each other. Environmental psychology works with different disciplines such as architecture, urban planning, education and biology, becoming a discipline of meeting, as their role has to do with human behavior. Interventions that environmental psychology does relate to the change of attitudes and values with learning and education, with the development staff as well as the action community. This area seeks preferably in the methods of research, people actively involved in the design and care of the environment (Gifford, 2007) (Connelly, 2000).

The environment becomes a problem of research on consequences of the deterioration of resources natural and human life affect large and small scales, focusing the attention of the community international scientific, seeking awareness of the urgent need responsibly use knowledge from all fields of science to give response to the increasing environmental degradation, which not only puts into crisis the living conditions on the planet, but even the very survival and perpetuation of man as a biological species. Primarily, attention has been focused on two key issues: the influence of the environment and the changes that have suffered this on people, their behaviors and attitudes and their influence on the average, companies, large potential impact of the factor humans on the environment, degrading behaviors, concepts and ways of life in general (Connelly, 2000).

Environmental psychology is concerned with the study of environmental consciousness of human beings, including the various processes that shape it also a function of character applied in the same. This constitutes an ideal instrument for promoting the formation of adequate environmental awareness in humans, enabling them to live with the environment, preserve, and transform it. This is done according to their needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs, to preserve and develop the cultural richness of mankind, to produce goods and material wealth, increase the productive potential. It is ensuring equal opportunities for all, without implying endanger our environment, including its various systems of the same (Crosson-Tower, 2005).

Environmental awareness is defined as the system of experiences, knowledge and experience that the individual is actively using their relationship with the environment; it has several indicators, consisting of complex psychological processes such as knowledge, awareness, attitudes, perceptions and human behavior (Ittelson, 1974) (Crosson-Tower, 2005).
