CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION

Abstract

In this study we try to explore the concept of education in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on the development and grooming of looked after children and its relation with educational development and growth of these children. The research also analyzes many aspects of how do children survive the pressures of foster care and tries to gauge its effect on educational background and progress of these looked after children. Finally the research describes various factors which are responsible for poor educational outcomes, which tend to make way for hampering progress for foster children and tries to describe the overall effect on the future of these children who are being looked after.

Brief Statement of Project

A brief statement of project, which would help us tailor and design our research, shall help us make way to develop our project shall be to “identify factors that lead to poor educational outcomes for looked after children in the United Kingdom”.

Rationale

As a researcher, I have experience of working with looked after children during my final placement for my degree course. The paper shall pertain to describe the kind of problems and hindrances, which occur in the context of extending quality care and consideration towards the development and growth of children, who are being brought up under someone else' supervision and guardianship. While this may appear to be a great service to the society, a great deal of effort has been extended by people involved in the development of the society as we speak.

Background and Context

Looked after children, or simply referred to as foster children, are amongst the most challenged people of the society. Due to demise and death of parents, divorce or separation of the couple and even, in many cases, the inability of actually take care, foster children come into existence, who either land in the dumps around the society, or become a major part of the on-going crimes and criminal activities.

Those who are lucky generally land at foster homes and become part of what we call 'looked after children'.
