Introduction

Information systems or information technology is emerging as an interesting field in research studies in this information age. In essence, HRIS (Human Resource Information Systems) is the new management information systems (MIS) that is increasingly gaining the importance by many organizations those apparently investing substantial amounts to support their human resource functions (Markova, 2012). Numerous studies have collated HRIS advantages, disadvantages, as well as usages on various occasions with related to HR planning and other HR functions. The objective of this research paper is therefore to critically take stock on role of HRIS in Human Resource Management in the organizations.

HR transformation and HRIS

The introduction of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems has strengthen HR transformation that resulted in HRIS, an element of ERP system, to effectively plan the HR activities as well as incorporate employee records, resources, trainings, rewards and the like (Chandra, 2012). Moreover, Kassim et al. (2012) critically evaluated and supported the literature that HRIS play a significant role in HR transformation with relation to planning related activities, recruiting, hiring, screening, and storing personal data on employees changing the traditional management styles of HR personnel.

In addition, the research of Chandra (2012) suggested that HRIS has strengthen not only the strategic role of HR function as strategic planning and implementation but also helped the organizations to align the employee records, resources and rewards with growing needs of business. Markova (2012) added this that HRIS does not completely replaced the traditional administrative role, but actually complemented it by bridging the gap between the strategic HR role and HR specialist.
