Introduction

President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) are among the highest ranking officers appointed in any healthcare. The main responsibility of these officers is to articulate the mission and vision of organization along with specification of organizational core competencies. Other senior executives may include Chief Information officer (CIO), Chief operations officer (COO), Chief Privacy officer (CPO), Chief Marketing officer (CMO) chief security officer (CSO) Chief Technology officer (CTO), and Chief knowledge officer (CKO). For any small start up and business CEO can be the only person to take responsibilities and roles of all these various executives. However a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is appointed in healthcare to take charge of various roles and responsibilities. Healthcare of United States is very complex and it needs huge strength and motivation to stay completive in the industry by providing proper and quality care to the patients. In United States there are more than half of senior executives that are providing effective benefits to their employees which is considered as the most challenging factor in healthcare (Tulenko, 2009). They are also striving to provide quality care to their patients. Thus in this paper I am going to interview Alan Kaplan, who is Sr.VP/Chief Medical Officer, Iowa Health System and President/CEO at Iowa Health Physicians & Clinics.

What type of health care organization are you affiliated with? What is your position within the health care organization? Describe your role and scope of responsibilities.

I am affiliated with a health care organization named as Iowa Health System which is one of the most integrated health systems of nation. Iowa Health care is providing care throughout Illinois and Iowa having effective relationship with more than 200 physician clinics and 26 hospitals in rural and metropolitan communities. There are more than 24000 e employees employed in various entities of IHS. IHS provides complete range of care to patients and families therefore every year huge number of patients visits IHS clinics and hospitals (3.1 million) (www.ihs.org). Iowa health system is considered as the fifth largest nondenominational health system in United States having annual revenue of 2.8 billion dollars. In addition to improve health of people in its communities IHS provides community benefit programs and services. At Iowa health system I am working as Sr. VP/ CMO and president/CEO at Iowa heath physician & clinics. At Iowa I am responsible for everything; however my main responsibility is to oversee the operations and decisions of physicians and other clinical personnel. I have the responsibility of leading the entire departments of the organization along with development and execution of strategies that uses opportunities provided by technology, it helps me and my organization in gaining patient loyalty and gives organization a competitive advantage.
