Toxin mediated diseases caused by this organism include food poisoning, scarlet fever, toxic shock syndrome, and scalded skin syndrome. Medical risk factors for S. aureus infection include diabetes, chronic liver disease, nutritional deficiencies, burns, and congenital and acquired immune deficiencies.
