Journal Entry: Managers in the 21st Century

In MGMT 3610 this week we learned if managers and leaders are similar or not. Robbins and Coulter (2009) describe a manager as a person who organizes and supervises the work of other people so that administrative aims can be achieved where as a leader is a person who inspires other people to accomplish aims and has decision-making power. As the Coordinator of Nuclear Medicine Technology Program at XYZ Community College, I am in an organizational position. I manage lecture and clinical programs to achieve their educational experience and also make every effort to relate our program's aims to the academies' by evaluating program outcomes all through the year. As a Nuclear Medicine Technology Program Instructor, I am more of a leader. I make every effort possible to encourage our pupils to accomplish their educational aim of an A.A.S degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology and ace their certification board with success.

The general group structure consists of Health Technologies, Arts and Sciences, Business and Information Technologies and Engineering Technologies. I am responsible for the organization, management and syllabus design of the nuclear medicine program (Robbins and Coulter, 2009, p.242).

As defined by Dunn (2010), motivation is closely associated to the crucial organizational function of influencing as it deals closely with the person. So the only way the manager can apply the appropriate motivational technique is by getting to know the workers and understanding them (Robbins and Coulter, 2009, p.352). As a program manager and coach for XYZ community college I have set aims that relate to the expectations and aims of the institution. I am motivated as I am aware of the aims set hence I set for the individual effort to accomplish the aims. Individually my efforts are not rewarded with praise or money but I am rewarded with the flexible work program sand the contentment of achieving the aims. The institution gives acknowledgment awards such as worker of the month.

As a coach the motivational techniques I use are the aim-setting theory and Vroom's expectancy theory. I believe learners are motivated when aims are clearly ...
