Many investigations have taken place to try to explain and understand role theory. Following one of them, the 'Empirical Investigation' made by Sallie M. Henry and K. Todd Stevens, there are a number of definitions of Role Theory defined in different ways by various authors exploring this subject, such as sociologist Bruce Biddle, Theodore Sarbin, author of “Role Theory” (1966), sociologist Rodney Stark or Joel Jeffrey and Anthony Putman in their joint venture “Relationship definition and management” (1994). Above mentioned Biddle describes Roles Theory as “behaviors characteristic of one or more persons in a context” (Biddle 1986). Sarbin takes a particularly applicable view of role theory because he specifically includes personality in his description: “role theory is an interdisciplinary theory in that its variables are drawn from studies of culture, society, and personality” (Sarbin 1986). Sociologist Stark divides roles for “achieved or ascribed”, where “an achieved role is a position that a person assumes voluntarily which reflects personal skills, abilities, and effort. An ascribed role is a position assigned to individuals or groups without regard for merit but because of certain traits beyond their control”, (Stark 2007), and is usually forced upon a person.

From these differing views of roles, one can see that roles can therefore be viewed as a tripartite: a position, behaviors associated with the position, and a set of personality characteristics associated with those behaviors (Jeffrey and Putman, 1994).

The theory of 'Belbin's Team Roles suggests that in any co-operating business there is always a team of people who are involved in the present and future successes of a company. They are people who have certain jobs that they have to do, and their jobs are described by these names: Plant, Co-ordinator, Monitor Evaluator, Implementer, Completer, Resource Investigator, Shaper, Team Worker, and finally a Specialist (Belbin, 1988) (apx.1). These people co-operate as a team to be as successful as possible in their ...
