Introduction

Research shows that using a cell phone while driving increase the chances of the driver of getting into a car crash or accident. According to the latest research conducted by AAA foundation for Traffic Safety it has been found that majority of the cars that were towed due to some damage were involved in some type of external distraction on the part of the driver. Such incident of car towing between year 1999 to 1995 were analyzed and it was found that around 8.3 percent drivers were involved in some type of external distraction such as a person or an event accounted for 29.4 percent, adjusting audio accounted for 11.4 percent, distraction due to passenger accounted for 10.9 percent while surprisingly usage of cell accounted for 1.5 percent. Additionally, NTSB in its recent proposal for ban on usage of cell phone while driving suggested that the number of people losing their lives last year due to car crashes and accidents with regards to distracting crossed 3000 people. The main aim of this report is to provide for proposal that why do people need to stop using cell phone and discuss in detail the hazards of using cell phone. The policy will present with the suggestion and recommendation to safeguard and protect the drivers from getting involved into car crashes.

Discussion

The figures provided by CITA suggests that there were around 225 million users of cell phones in December 2007 who make up 84 percent of the total population of the country and they spent 2.1 trillion minutes on cell phone and sent 363 billion messages. There was around 23 percent increase in the number of users, 40 percent increase in the number of minutes and 348 percent increase in the messages when compared with the figures of December 2005. Research was conducted to find the impact of cell phone on the vision and hearing ability and it was found that it results in auditory and visual distraction. Another research suggests that increased exposure to radio frequency radiation may result in neurological effects .
