Practice of Counseling

Introduction

Sigmund Freud had founded psychoanalytic Theory, which in fact is the Theory of Personality and psychotherapeutic approach in Mental Health Science. Psychoanalytic approach deals with establishing the existence of conscious and unconscious providing individual choices in his / her life rather than being at the mercy of unperceived forces within his / her mind. Psychoanalyst attempts to discover the secrets of human psyche for treatment on the subject matter. The analyst (therapist) advises very little but guides the person in interpreting the meaning of the intrusion in the daily life. This counseling model normally takes many years for treatment up to 1 -3 sessions a week. For Ruth case I will use psychoanalytic therapy.

Discussion

Psychoanalytic approach can be referred to an intensive form of Psychodynamic therapy. It refers to the human personality, which is produced by the interaction of conscious and unconscious elements. Human personality has deep influence of his / her family foundations, background and living style therefore his/her conscious and unconscious will definitely produce some shadows of his/her race, cast, culture and social status hence I will apply psychoanalytic approach to discover the Ruth's internal conflicts and family. Society and education take part in integrating her conflicting identities.

As stated earlier, this counseling model treatment lasts for many years therefore not all patients could benefit from psychoanalytic treatment. Potential patients should fulfill the following criteria:

The ability to establish an effective working relationship with the analyst (therapist) doing family counseling. In other words a free association is required enabling analyst to come across his/her personality completely (Corey 2009).

Average I.Q. Level / intelligence and some know-how of psychological theory.

The ability to fight against frustrations, sadness, depression, mental stress and other painful emotions.

The ability to differentiate between reality and fantasy.

It has been observed that if a person is suffering from some psychological problems, it definitely affects the whole family and sometimes it gets so sever that whole family has to go for psychoanalytic treatment therefore there must be no ignorant if specific symptoms of any psychological problems are found in any family member.

Psychoanalytic treatment is suitable for those patients having depression, character disorders, chronic relationship problems or neurotic conflicts and all above could be due to many factors like physical disability, lack of beauty, poor education progress, ignorance from parents, misbehavior from other family members, unemployment, social status, sex, economic insecurity, conflicts between parents or their separation, sense of inferiority to others, infertility, long lasting illness, problems from children, unforeseen fear of future etc (Cushman 1995).

It may also be possible a person may be having any of above problem either realized or not but in that case a family as a whole needs to be treated psychologically and the responsibility of an analyst (therapist) increases considerably to make a workable strategy to deal with the whole family because now every member will have to be tackled differently as per his/her specific problem because these conflicts are now part of his/her personality, not easy to ...
