Abstract

This paper describes a scenario, which shows particular pain management behaviour of the person. The paper first describes the whole scenario and then theoretical principles for analysis of case study on the basis of Erik Erikson life theory. It then describes culture, values, beliefs, norms, and impact on health, life style choices, and risk behaviours regarding this concept. It then describes about the substance, its management and discharge plan which should be given be health care providers at the time of discharge.

Introduction

Jeffrey is a ex Australian Rules footballer who had 2 times total knee reconstructions during his football career and re-injured his knee playing football with his 2 children in the back yard. He has been taking Nurofen plus tablets ((ibuprofen + codeine sulphate)to relive his knee pain, one day he took 10 tablets of this medicine and then he developed epigastric pain and dark bowel. He went to hospital where endoscopy and colonoscopy was done and he was given Intravenous Therapy of Normal Saline over 6 hours and then IV Pantoprazole 40mg stat and s/c morphine 10mg 4hrly PRN. He was then further investigated by the team of doctors. The scenario describes about the human nature, how a person behaves when he suffers from pain.

Discussion

Erik Erikson Theory of Development

Eriksondescribed that the personality of the person continues to develop throughout the life span. He emphasizes on success and greatness of human attitudes. He described the external landscapes associated with history, culture, and society of human beings. Erikson's was concerned with the psychosocial development, or development of an individual within a social culture. He described eight stages of development. Each stage was assigned to developmental task, that how an individuals with a crisis addresses it to resolve. According to him, a crisis is a turning point, that tension and conflict are potentials of strength, growth, and commitment. Their solutions become solutions to broader cultural problems (Shaffer, 2008, pp. 41). According to him person develops healthy personality by addressing his life's outer as well as inner dangers. Each personality part has a specific time in the life span when the personality of person develops. If it is not developed then the person's capacity to deal with reality is hindered. Erikson demonstrates the process of personality development that occurs throughout the life span. He demonstrates how a person learns from the crises and finds new ways to get more healthy solution and attempts for life that is free of pain and crises (Shaffer, 2008, pp. 41).

Culture, Values, Beliefs and Norms and Impact on Health

The people of some cultural groups have a greater tolerance to pain as compared to others and can tolerate increased levels pain for longer periods. Pain has social, psychological, as well as physical effects; it is also influenced by cultural factors. Therefore, individuals of different cultures react differently to pain.
