In this paper my goal is to adopt the stance of the famous art critic Clement Greenberg? pick a relevant category of art? and defend it as either being successful or non successful.

The art movement choosen is Minimalism. I am choosing Minimalism because I am not really familiar with any of the relevant categories? but I have been informed that this category presents an additional challenge so I would like to attempt it. I would also like to say two more things in this introductory paragraph. One? I have never critiqued art before? at least other than in my own mind? and two a lot of the things I will be writing on or about the art will be my own opinions regarding the art. With that being said please enjoy my first art critique ever on Minimalism art (Stokstad? 15-22). I would first like to explain a few things before I get into the actual critique. I mentioned before the famous art critic Clement Greenberg and how I will be adopting his stance; I would now like to give you a little background of who he was. Clement Greenberg is regarded by some to be the greatest art critic of the second half of the 20th century and possibly the greatest art critic of all time. That is of course an opinion but the fact is he was and is an extremely well known art critic. Greenberg was known for his "remarkable eye" (Fenton? 1) and also known for his editorial skills. The editorial skills were very important because it allowed him to translate what he saw into writing in a way that the reader could visualize what Greenberg was talking about without having to see the actual image (Stokstad? 15-22).

Next? I would like to give you a brief description of what Minimalism is in the art world. By definition? "Minimalism is a form of art on which objects are stripped down to their elemental? geometric form? and presented in an impersonal manner? usually in the form of installation? or sculpture."(Artcyclopedia? 1) Before I go any deeper into the definition I would like to also say how minimalism was a reaction to Abstract Expressionism. Abstract Expressionism was a type of art that was first? very abstract and in a way chaotic. It was a very imaginative way to do art. An example of Abstract Expressionism would be an artist splattering paint all over a canvas any way they see fit and then giving it a title. (http://wwar. com) When you viewed a painting like this it left the true meaning if any? up to the viewer's imagination. Many Abstract Expressionism pieces of art are what I call "busy". (Http: //wwar. com) There are all types of loud colors and different shapes everywhere. Whatever the title may be for a particular painting really doesn't seem to matter? every person who sees the image will interpret it in a slightly different ...
