Introduction

Research in Motion (RIM) is a Canadian telecommunication and wireless devise company, which is best known for its BlackBerry smart phone development. The company is one of the leading manufacturer, designer, and marketer of creative and innovative wireless solutions for the global market of mobile communications. RIM aims to provide solutions and platforms for flawless access to the information that is time sensitive including phone, email, SMS messaging, internet, and other internet based applications, with the help of developing integrated software, hardware, and services that support numerous wireless network standards. Moreover, technology of RIM has enabled a wide range of third party manufacturers and developers in order to enhance their products and services with the help of wireless connectivity (Marsh 2002 pp. 507-542).

Strategic Business Unit (SBU)

RIM established the strategic business units. Each unit performs independently. oEach unit is a profit centre, clearly responsibility and duties. Each unit performs the different tasks, and they can support each other. BlackBerry is a product of the Canadian company Research In Motion. BlackBerry has contributed to progress in the market of mobile devices, the first focusing on e-mail. Used here for the first time the method of push e-mail allowing continuous connection of the terminal with a BlackBerry and receive email in real time. What distinguishes the BlackBerry is the BlackBerry OS operating system (Robinson 1991 pp. 144-147).

BlackBerry is available in two versions: BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) and Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES). BIS is intended mainly for private land. Supports up to 10 email accounts a POP3 or IMAP fourth BES provides support for mail servers based on the enterprise in large companies (Microsoft Exchange, Novell Groupwise, Lotus Domino). Besides the possibility to send and receive emails and BES-users with remote access from their devices to the corporate address book and calendar. BlackBerry services are also available on some phones from other manufacturers, which is available to BlackBerry mail program (Moran 1998 pp. 151-163).

The company Research In Motion mainly deals in its home country markets, as well as, in the global market of smart phones. Generally speaking, North America is less developed in terms of the introduction and usage of wireless technologies, as compared to other regions such as Scandinavia, particularly Sweden.
