Statement of the Problem

The study is related to the self-esteem and depression, which focuses on the influence of depression and self-esteem among the male and female.

Significance of the Problem

It is easy to confuse the lack of self-esteem and depression at first glance, but one very different from each other but may nevertheless lead to it. Generally temperament plays a key role in its ability to be optimistic or pessimistic, to have magical or realistic expectations, anticipate or deny the obstacles ahead. The happiest person is the one that benefits, not false hope, talents and environment, but protects itself by its past experience, against the evils to come. This requires the maturity of several cognitive functions, including the expectations and the organization of its business.

- Is there is correlation between self esteem and depression?

- Is there are gender differences in depression?

Variables

The independent variable that is used in the study is gender and the dependent variable that is used in the study is depression.

Hypothesis

H 1 : There is a negative correlation between self esteem and depression.

H 2 : There are gender differences in depression and self - esteem.

CHAPTER NO 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

One of the most important psychological causes of depression is loss of self esteem. It is logical to see how people when they are prey to this disease are depression, low self-esteem, people lose interest in things more important, as is the meaning of life, love theirs, their children, their person, they feel useless, good for nothing, that nobody loves them. Then we can say that to help a person in this state to recover its self-worth, we must work with the motivations, the attitudes, etc. It is not only with drugs that cure, as we have said countless times. It is emphasized that many are wasting their time taking pills for relief, not believing or knowing that depression is a state of negative attitude; people have to recover on the basis of psychotherapy (Vohs and Heatherton, 2001).

Self-esteem can be diminished as a result of actual losses, like divorce. It is logical that pass this stage, it is natural and normal depression that occurs in these cases, the same happens with fired from a job, symbolic losses like loss of a physical member of a family when a loved one dies or is long, loss of power (Kernis, 2003).
