Site Management and Safety

Introduction

The construction industry has become one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the world. It is not only responsible for rebuilding areas, but it also provides power and services to its customers to meet their needs. It has also benefited the human race in many ways. Site managers are hired in order to ensure the completion of project on time. Site managers run building sites, engineers and clients and make sure that the projects are completed safely on time and in the given budget. If the budget exceeds, then the site manager is responsible to justify the issues to the clients (Halpin & Senior,2010.pp.9).

Along with all other responsibilities, one of the most essential duties of a site manager is to ensure safety to its employees, engineers and all other people involved in the project. Safety management is a process which involves identifying the problem areas and peruses safety activities at the construction area and site. The site manager should work together with its team to avoid injuries and provide a safe working environment. In short, everyone involved in the construction project, should try to maintain health and safety at the site.

Discussion

According to international laws, construction managers are responsible to enable safety at the site area. But it is not only their responsibility. The client and the architect are also responsible in maintaining health and safety while working on a project. Therefore, the client, architect and the site manager should cooperate with each other in order to avoid accidents and injuries.

Role of client in maintaining safety

The client is the person for whom the construction of a project is being carried out. People assume that only the site manager and engineers are responsible for enabling safety, but that is not true. The client is also responsible and should also take adequate measures to maintain safety and health. The primary duty of the client is to organize a risk assessment of the construction project. The assessment is prepared to acquire different possible risks that can affect the entire project (Gustin,2007,pp.79).

The Client should evaluate all the potential risks associated with the project and should ensure that adequate systems are available to control the risk factors. The client should also arrange and devise specifications regarding health and safety. The client should provide a healthy and safe working environment to everyone. Role of the architect in maintaining safety

Architects are a group of people who design the overall structure of a particular project. This includes preparing designs, drawing, sketches and analysis of the project. Architects at all levels recognize different risks and eliminate them, in order to carry out the project safely. Designers work and decisions have a direct impact on the health and safety at the site.therefor it is essential for the architects to focus on the health and safety from the beginning. Architects should evaluate the safety of people who will be responsible in repairing and maintain the machines and materials. If architects fail to consider these issues, it will result in increase costs that will have an impact on ...
