Introduction (The Case of U.S. Postal Service)

The following case relates to the Change Management and especially sustaining change. U.S. postal service in early ages was one of the most effective service organizations. The use of postal service was at its peak, and people use the service for their documents, goods, bills, cheques, and other material from place to place. It was the most profit earning organization. One reason for its huge operations and success was the business and industrial environment with competitive pricing. People usually do not consider any alternative against U.S. postal service. In the mid-ninety's the organization achieved its highest economic growth. There operations cross billions of profits with more than 800,000 employees. Everything was going fine suddenly after the year 2000 the world started changing. The innovations, instantaneousness, and creativeness over comes the traditional practices. Emails and other electronics modes come within the environment. People started adopting the change and use internet and emails for their documentations and other files. Bills started paying through the internet and credit cards. The postal service's started to become obsolete. The organization started to bring change in the organization.

Change

To bring the change and adopt the innovation and technology surrounded in the environment the US postal service launched website www.usps.gov that assist the customers to use the information of mailing tips, zip codes, and other post rates throughout the country and internationally. They started the system of electronic postmarks and verification of digital signature. They introduce internet kiosks in their post offices. They bring lots of new technological changes to compete and survive in the technological environment. The case have discussed that there are still certain complications and problems regarding change. The further assignment discussed about action plan of overcoming the problems.

Brainstorming

To solve the problem and create action plan it was significant to bring people together in the brainstorming program. These people include Director, Caretaker, Navigator, Coach, interpreter, and Nurturer. They have started their discussion to bring action plan.

Understanding the need for change in U.S. postal service is critically important for the whole management team. Managing change will not be an easy task but its effective implementation depends on the co-ordination of the team members and all members will have to realize the goal and objective of this change and align their tasks accordingly (Worley et al. 2001: pp. 210).

Organizations have faced significant changes in the environment of the business with the changes in information technology, highly competitive firms in the industry and more focus on quality and customer services. It has been observed that change will remain a dilemma in how to cope with challenges that are often mutually exclusive: a challenge to assure high organizational change performance and a challenge to sustain organizational social integrity.
