Introduction

Film The Help is the combination of tragedy and drama. The film is based on a famous novel The Help written by Katthryn. The word Help in the movie defines the maids who assist white people in their home. The film takes off with the relationship of a white woman Eugenia (Skeeter) Phelan and her maid. When Skeeter was away from home, her maid left home. It motivates Skeeter to stands for rights of African-American. The film illustrates the era of Civil Rights in the early 1960's. The thesis of the film is on the issues of African-Americans in United States. The film main character Skeeter is a college graduate who returned home with the graduation degree in journalism from University of Mississippi.

Being a journalist she decides secretly to write a book name “Help”. Her aim is to bring up the miserable life of Black-Americans who endure difficult life. She wants to bring up the reality that those maids who cook, clean, and bring up their children treated harshly. The character Aibileen involves in the scene who is the maid of Skeeter's best friend Elizabeth. She takes care of everything including raising Elizabeth's daughter. Aibileen agrees to share her feelings to Skeeter for her book. Skeeter's second interviewee is maid Minny. She worked for Hilly, but because of Hilly's manipulations she left and now working for Celia. Hilly and her friends think that Celia is a white trash because, she treats Black like friends and relative. Hilly Holbrook can be called villain of the film.

The film attracts the audience when maids courageously come forward for their rights after the murder of Medger Evers. Black women daringly tell the stories of their tragedy to Skeeter. They narrate stories of institutionalized racism. The story swivels around Mississippi maids.

Plots—Aibileen Clark is 40-50 years old she spends her life bringing up children. Minny the maid is well known for her cooking. Eugenia “Skeeter” is the main character who is a university graduate and wants to buildup career in writing. Hilly played a negative role in the movie who hates Black- American.

Discrimination and Racism in the Film

The story of the emergence of African American Studies within the United States in the 1960s is a story that challenges conventional wisdom concerning the development of academic disciplines. Institutions of higher education are charged with the creation, documentation, and dissemination of knowledge. Traditionally, Studies reflect the core methodological, conceptual, and theoretical threads of a discipline. It is taken for granted that new disciplines and fields of specialization only emerge when trained scholars who share some intellectual point of view. With African American Studies the traditions were upended. It is a field of study that emerged from the efforts of politically radicalize young adults that challenged and transformed what we understand to be the utility and importance of scholarship and its impact on the communities inhabiting spaces outside of the ivory tower.
