Should abortion be legal?

Thesis Statement

“Abortion should be legal because it gives the woman the right to choose.”

Introduction

What actually abortion is and who is affected by it? An abortion is a medical method/procedure for terminating a pregnancy by fetus removal. It directly affects the pregnant woman because this medical method for ending the pregnancy is performed on her body. Millions of abortions are done every year in United States but out of those abortion procedures, only 5% are done legally. There are several abortion methods that women can choose for terminating their pregnancy. But these methods can be categorized into two distinct categories: Preventive methods and Reactionary methods. One of the most popular preventive method is taking “Morning after Pill” to prevent the conceiving of a fetus or baby. This preventive method will make the woman have a miscarriage within 48 hours. One of the most common reactionary methods is a surgery for removing the baby or fetus. Women can go for this method up to 22 weeks of pregnancy (Mosser, 2011).

Discussion

Reasons Why Abortion should be Legal

The very first reason for a woman to have an abortion is potential threat to her life because pregnancy put the mother in a life threatening position. Only the doctors, with their knowledge and experience in the field, can figure out whether a pregnancy is life threatening or if the mother and baby can make it together. According to one research study, about 90% of women who are in life threatening situation do not want to live, but they want their baby to make it. The life threatening situation can also occur when mother is on a suicide watch and trying to kill the baby and herself. Moreover, woman can potentially fall into a coma during pregnancy; this makes the survival of both, mother and a baby, quite bleak as medical history shows (Samandari et al., 2012).

Additionally, if mother is not eating and getting the right vitamins that she needs for herself and her baby. Sometimes you have to think about the good and the bad in some situations. Furthermore, a good number of pregnancy cases are criminal, that is, mother of a baby is raped by someone and she resultantly conceived a baby. This put an extra emotional and financial burden on the mother and she might not be strong enough to go through caring of a baby and herself. So abortion is the only way out for her and if abortion is granted legal status, it will be more affordable and convenient for everybody (Mondragon et al., 2011).

Rape Cases

In the cases of rape, about 25% of the women decided to go through pregnancy and have a baby, rest of them illegally abort the baby. However, those who decides not to abort, about 70% of them eventually give up the child for adoption to the couples who cannot have a baby and would love to raise one of their own. Some women would live in fear of raising a baby ...
