Work Place Bullying

Introduction

In a work place, it is very common to see a boss bullying his or her own employees. Such an organization is said to have a bullying work place culture within it. The best example for such a scenario is the movie, Devil wears Prada. Through this movie, I will be analyzing the various forms of mistreatment and incivility that take place in an organization, by coworkers and bosses. In this movie, the victim is Andy, who gets mistreated by her coworkers Emily and Nigel and bullied by the incivility of her boss Miranda. But fortunately there are a few ways through which, the victims can be helped to combat the uncivil managing of their bosses. The whole purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how incivility can come down in other different forms of abuse and tyrannical leadership in an office and how we can help ourselves and combat such issues.

We can describe civility as showing a certain moral standard of respect for coworkers or employees in the workplace and other human beings when we are talking in general terms. Civility is the core necessity for us in order to develop and soften the differences between the upper and lower class citizens and more importantly between employers and their employees in a work place. A number of surveys have been conducted which show us that most of the aggression that takes place at work places is in a less intense form. This means that most of the time, the bullying or aggression is verbal instead of physical, indirect instead of direct, passive instead of active and subtle instead of overt.

We see a less intense form of abuse in the film. However, most times, less intense forms of aggression and incivility lead to bigger problems which become hard to tame and lead to the physical, active and overt ways of handling the situation. In the movie, the devil wears prada, there comes a scene of incivility that takes place between Miranda, the boss and Andy, her secretary. Miranda basically abuses Andy verbally y calling her a fat girl and putting her physical appearance down. The way she does that seems like the opinions that come out of Miranda are the only ones that matter. This was just the start of the spiral of incivility for Andy in which, she ...
