Introduction

The primary objective of the United States law enforcement agencies is to reduce he incidences of crime and build successful relationships between police executives and citizens. This objective can be achieved by the police department in two major ways. First of all, the is the major responsibility of police officers is to enhance the safety of people and the second aspect is the establishment of an environment which may promote cooperation as well as mutual respect between police agency and people. This positive culture can be only obtained when there is a reduction in the violent arguments between police and public. The police department is also associated with some limitations which are related to the law. Furthermore, the state law can determine the role and policies for police department in order to ensure their effective ways of operations against crimes and security purposes for people (justice.gov).

The public police are available in different forms, which include tribal police, special-jurisdiction police, and taskforce. Furthermore, the municipal, county and regional police are also available and these organizations have more police officers and other employees as compared to the federal and state organizational levels. Despite of the assigned roles to the police officers in the United States, the responsibilities of these police officers are different on the basis of expectations from source. The people have some expectations from the police department; on the other hand, the police officers have some expectations from their department. These expectations may be formal, because the background and foundation is based on rules and regulations. Furthermore, the informal expectations are also appeared, which are coming colleague police officers and finally, individual police officers have their own specific viewpoints about their nature of duty and responsibility (justice.gov).

Functions of a Police Agency

Studies have been conducted on responsibilities of police with respect to the community and it has been reported that the role of police agency is directly related to the job satisfaction of its officers. Most of the police officers have got the perception that their images is of less value in terms of community insight. The might be two factors which are responsible for this situation; one is the non-enforcement behaviors when there is needed and second is the disagreement relating to the public views and thus, these two are directly related to their job dissatisfaction issues (Youngyol & Schafer, 2009).

The duties of police department is varied from day to day and these duties are included the highly risky as well as physical work to minor paper work task on desk. Whatever the circumstances may be the police agency has to follow its responsibilities and perform its duties in order to maintain peace within the state.
