Anemia

Anemia is a decrease in the circulating red blood cells. Usually, persons are supposed anemic when the levels of their hemoglobin are more than two standard deviations below the mean level in their hospital's laboratory. The identification of anemia is subjective to variables for example pregnancy status (hemodilution in pregnancy lowers measured hemoglobin), the patient's age (neonates are anemic at levels of hemoglobin that would be considered polycythemic in some adults), residential altitude, gender (men have higher hemoglobin levels than women), and racial or ethnic background.
