System Development Methodologies: The Problem Of Tenses

By Brain Fitzgerald (2000)

In this topic/paper, what we are supposed to propose a critical appraisal about the system development methodologies. The first point that comes in mind after reading the article is that, the current systems which are available now, are mostly based on the development methodologies which were proposed, developed and emerged in the early 1967 to 1977 and still in use today.

The second argument that is mandatory to cover in this section is the development environment profile is much more dissimilar from that which was overcome in the period during 1967 to 1977. The design strategies that are also fundamental such are the information hiding, functional decomposition and techniques like the diagramming of the data flow and modelling of the entity relationship also have stemmed from the era mentioned. In this paper, the arguable statement, “problem of tenses” (Friedman, 1989) also have relationship to the methodologies of systems development; what is in need, is move forward from the past imperfection of the model and derive new methodologies that have more appropriate needs and wants of the existing development environment.

As discussed earlier, the system development methodologies that are in use today have been originated from the set of concepts that came from the era of 10 year period, which elaborated the summary of system development lifecycle as a new concept for the first time then. SDLC pursue a project through from the initial thought to the point where it is a functional system. It is a centre part of the methodology that is used when shedding light on a project.

Modelling and Simulation in Systems Engineering

Andrew P. Sage, Stephen R. Olson (2001)

The Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC), or in system engineering Software Development Life Cycle, software engineering and information systems, referred as the process of making or varying systems, and the methodologies and methods that people use to expand these systems. Basically, the idea usually refers to information systems or computer. Importance on this appraisal (SDLC) is on life cycle of man-made technological area. But there are many other life-cycle models to choose from. These comprise, for every life cycle, ecological life cycles whether technological or biological, has a beginning point and an end. In software engineering the SDLC idea underpins many kinds of software development methodologies. These methodologies form the structure for planning and controlling the creation of an information system (Andrew & Stephen, pp. 90-116): the software development process.

Computer systems are multifaceted and frequently (particularly with the current era rise of Service-Oriented Architecture) link numerous conventional systems supplied by different software firms/companies. To direct this level of difficulty, a number of SDLC methodologies or model have ...
