Introduction

Media is considered as one of the most powerful and influential tolls in the contemporary society. The various media channels can be utilized to share an ample amount of information with the global audience, and establish a communication link between different societies. In this perspective the media outlets share a responsibility to the overall society, to adequately handle this power and utilize to achieve the greatest benefit for the society. The population depends on the information provided by the media outlets to remains abreast regarding the latest developments in the global environment, and how their personal and professional lives are impacted by such developments. Considering the wide span of subjects and issues that the media handles, it has a responsibility to protect the rights of every stakeholder in the overall society. Especially in the case of sensitive and catastrophic events, the media has to ensure that the information is shared throughout the society in a manner that the various involved groups are not negatively affected.

The Chilean coal mining incident can be rightly identified as one of the most catastrophic and significant, mining related incidents in the modern era. It was the event that occurred in 2010, which implicated the lives of 33 miners and their families in an adversity. These miners were forced to live in an unsafe environment for more than 17 days, when the roof of the mine collapsed, and trapping these men underneath 700 meters of earth (Juan, 2010). In this situation the most significantly affected stakeholders, are in fact the families of these miners.
