Contraction of Muscles at Molecular Level

The contractile unit of muscles is sarcomere. Each sarcomere unit consists of two sets of filaments known as actin. These actin filaments attach to the opposite sides of the sarcomere. Two beaded threads of protein twirl together to compose the actin filament. Myosin filaments are present in between the actin filaments. Myosin filament is also protein in nature; it has two head like outer projections and one elongated tail attached to other filaments.
