Research question

The article in review here addresses the question of how film production teams and SWAT officers deal with unexpected occurrence in their respective fields of work. The research looks into two varying scenarios that were faced on a movie set in a mansion and a crime scene, respectively. The research also revolves around how roles in teams are sometimes changed to adapt to the unanticipated events.

Theoretical framework

The article seeks to find out the link between the performance and unanticipated events that occur on film sets and SWAT operations. It is a well known fact that there can always be surprises in every line of work. Similarly, the fields of movie production and SWAT are no different. Things can go unplanned at crucial junctures which can affect the overall result. Surprises or unexpected occurrence can result in loss in terms of time and money for movie production and lives when we consider SWAT. The consequences of these events vary from one organization to another depending on the nature of work. These surprises can be a result of lack of hindsight or anticipation. In the case of movie production, delays can be in the form of loss of electricity on set. To get the shooting on track, the crew works to find alternate sources of generating electricity.

Organizational bricolage is another point that the article focuses on. Bricolage can also result in teams and organizations coming up with innovative solutions to unexpected events. The link between surprises and bricolage is vital. It is imperative to understand the benefits and drawbacks of having to deal with unplanned incidents (Johansson, 1996, pp. 78).

Methodology and Data Collection

Data in the article was conducted for two teams separate teams of SWAT officers and a film production crew.

SWAT Officers

Self-reported data can be collected verbally, through interviews or written questionnaires through. Self-reports vary widely depending on their degree of structure or standardization. Structured methods include interviews, self-report and tests, the most important feature is the inflexibility with both the interviewer and the interviewee, on the other unstructured methods allow more flexibility (both the informant and the interviewer) in the approach to the questions and answers. The methods of self-reported data collection unstructured or poorly structured include:

1. Structured interviews or dialogue as a conversation about the topic of interest.

2. Semi-structured interviews or focus, in which the interviewer uses a topic guide indicating the questions to be asked.

3. The focus group interviews, in which a group conversation about the topics listed in the topic guide.

4. The life stories, a technique that requires the informant in a chronological sequence relate their experiences about a topic.

5. The method of critical events involved in sounding the circumstances surrounding a behavior or event as determined relevant purpose.

6. The newspapers, which asks the informant to keep track daily of a particular aspect of his life.
