Introduction to the Book

Dr Bruce D. Perry is known for his work on childhood trauma and psychiatric issues. In his book, “The boy who was raised as a dog”, Dr. Perry explained the importance of nurturing children and provides scientific explanations about the development of brain through actual client cases (Perry, 2007). This essay describes the application of one of the chapters of this book “Skin Hunger” to a real life case. I would explain the behavioral problems faced by the child in the lights of point made by Dr Perry in chapter 4 of his book.

Summary of the Chapter

The chapter describes the situation of a 4 year old girl who was not growing despite of being tube fed. Her doctors believed that she was suffering from the first case of infantile anorexia. It was later discovered by Dr Perry that the girl actually had a form of “failure to thrive” which is usually seen in the infant children, and not common in the children of her age. The brain of the girl had failed to provide the chemical signals which were necessary for the healthy physical growth. The major reason of this problem was the fact that the girl did not receive necessary love and affection from her mother. Finally, the mother of the girl was moved in with the lady who was parenting her and as a result, the girl showed remarkable discovery. Through these results, Dr Perry illustrates that what role the affection plays in shaping the brain.
