Abstract

In this research, we will discuss communication disorders. Communication is a practice that let human beings to interact with their environment. Communication is a way by which people are able to express their feelings, emotions, needs and thoughts. Communication disorders are difficulties of speech or language. It affects the social, academic and professional life severely. Moreover, we will discuss its symptoms, types and behavior of children and elderly suffering from communication disorders.

Introduction

The ability to communicate is the most significant characteristic feature of being human. Speak, understand and agree are necessary skills in our society. A communication disorder is a mutilation in the skill of receiving and sending process of speech, hearing and language. A communication disorder is at times intense and sometimes vague. It may be genetically acquired or caused due to biological problems including brain abnormalities, psychological or physical trauma. Several infants are born with communication disorders while adults are also affected by this. Exposure to very loud noise, accidents are also the factors causing communication disorders in elderly. These people face many challenges in life. (McDonald, 2009)

Discussion

Communication disorders are found in all ages and in all its forms. Sometimes it is in infants by birth, sometimes caused by different external and internal factors. The stem of these disorders can be physical, biological or psychological. Communication disorder's intensity gets lower when children start going to school, but they still have problems with ways of communication. It is started as a primary disability but can lead to secondary disabilities resulting in depression, isolation, embarrassment and loss of confidence. Expressive language disorder is the developmental delays and problems in the capability to deliver speech. Mixed receptive-expressive language disorder identifies developmental delays and problems in the skill to comprehend spoken language and deliver speech. (Peterson & Lehiste, 2009)

Symptoms of communication disorders

Common symptoms of communication disorders are as follows. Young children having communication disorders may not be able to speak at all at an earlier stage, their vocabulary is not good as normal children have. In some cases children cannot even recognize what they are directed to do and they cannot pronounce names of objects. Children face problems in formulating words in school. Teenagers face problems in expressing ideas and thoughts. Emotional and behavioral problems are also noticed in this case. (Maurice & Luce, 2008)

Types of Communication disorders

Aphasia, it is language impairment due to injury or brain disease resulting in difficult to formulate, express or understand language. It includes delayed emergence of language, difficulty of writing, difficulty of remembering and of expression, difficulty in understanding words or sentences, difficult to read, difficulty of the sentence structure.

Apraxia is the trouble in programming language, which results in inconsistent words and phrases.

Dysarthria is group of disorders of speech resulting from paralysis, weakness or lack of muscle coordination of phonation.
