Introduction

The basic reason why people cling and hold on to their culture is because it defines and encircles their religious and ethical believes their social values and the general guidelines in day to day life. Hence, the attempt of a group of people to intermediate or dominate others in terms of their cultural values is a guaranteed act of conflict and offense.

Discussion

Cultural Conflicts in “Everyday Use” and “Mrs. Dutta Writes a letter”

Al though the stories behind the two essays and the characters in these stories differ. However, both the essays, i.e. Everyday Use by Alice Walker and “Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter” by Chitra Benerjee basically highlights the conflicts in culture in a society and its effects on common man's life.

Alice Walker's has three main characters in his story that includes a mother with her two daughters, Dee and Maggie, of which Dee does not live at home with her mother and sister. Moreover, she has a clear difference of opinion with her mother and sister with respect to the culture and traditions of her family.

The very fact that Dee has changed her name to Wangero is the indication of the presence of mundane materialism in Dee. Even the fact that she was named after her auntie is not good enough to keep her from being embarrassed by her original name. Her dressing also did not seem influenced by the values followed by her mother and Maggie. Moreover, she also seemed ignorant of the fact that she is bound to show courtesy and respect to her mother in the form of greeting her when she enters the home.
