Design: Origins and Significance

Introduction

Design generally refers to a convention or a plan for constructing a system, or an object (such as computers, drawings, processes and patterns). When design is taken as a verb it means developing a plan. There is no single definition of the term and definitions vary based on the field on study. Designing can be undertaken by an individual, such as graphic designer, or a team or organization, such as automobile designers. There are many fields where designing is the main step in the development of end project, or an idea. These fields may include product design, industrial design, graphic design, textiles, interiors, crafts, Fashion, and so on.

Design can also be defined in terms of strategy, or a roadmap for achieving certain objectives (in business context). It includes processes, activities, costs, parameters, plans, specifications, and what and how to operate within safety, economic, environmental, social, political, and legal constraints, to achieve goals (Victor, 2008).

There are certain elements which are required to be considered prior to designing, including socio-political, economic, functional, and aesthetic dimensions of design and object process. Designing process includes initial modelling, In-process alterations, and re-designing. There are various objects which are designed, including airplanes, websites, cloths, portals, games, and many others. It is not possible to discuss the designing of all fields and objects in a short essay; therefore, this essay focuses on history and origin of designing in few fields, and assesses the importance of designing on economy (Victor, 2008).

Design Origins and Histories

Web Designing

The history of web designing can be traced back to the development of web browser. Researchers needed to articulate Lee's research paper and therefore, the team decided to develop and browsing software based on HTML. It was in 1993, when Mosaic browser was developed and subsequently became the means for information sharing among CERN scientists. At that time, web designing did not included graphic designing and messages were only included text. Today, web designing has become a spate field, and many individuals learn web designing to communicate their hidden art. It is widely used in businesses, as companies use websites for multiple reasons. The standards and rules of web designing were drafted by the W3C, in 1994; as a result, different versions of HTML were developed (Staff & Conway, 2002).

Fashion Designing

The origins of fashion and fashion designing are traced in Paris France, throughout the early twentieth century. Some traces are also found in London, UK. Editors of fashion magazines of various countries used to send their reporters to fashion shows held at Paris. Department stores used to sent purchasing manager to Paris for buying cloths. Their styles and designs were copied and sold in various European markets. Today, fashion designing is considered as highly paid industry, and it is directly linked to other industries such as Film and entertainment industry (Staff & Conway, 2002).
