Enculturation

The term 'enculturation' derives from the word 'culture' and indicates the assimilation of the contents, practices and values of the cultural traditions of a group by the individuals belonging to the group. The term was introduced into social sciences by M. J. Herskovits (1948), in order to indicate the complex interaction between an individual and the particular culture of which this person is both creation and creator. It is clear that when cultural models are passed on from one generation to another they are never exactly the same, as they are continuously subject to additions and innovations (Callari, 1993).
