Ethics in Engineering

Introduction

Ethics of engineering is defined as the area where engineers work is examined and evaluated on the criteria that he/ she meets the standards that are set for them along with completing their tasks. These standards include obligation they have towards their employees, clients, and public as well as towards the organization. This means that engineering professionals are required to define their rules of behavior in dealing with: colleagues, customers and employees as ethics in engineering are becoming a topic of concern now.Due to the sheer important of engineers and engineering towards the economy's growth and progress ethics in engineering is gaining a lot of importance. 

This is so as engineers undertake research, work design, creation and operation of products, processes and infrastructure around us. Applications of engineering sciences are the engine of socio-economic developments. They play a vital role when it comes to providing for basic human needs, eradicating poverty, ensuring sustainable development area such as water supply, sanitation, as well as towards, housing, construction, energy, and transportation. The engineering applications are also involved crucially in the prevention of emergencies at the level of relief, reconstruction and bridge the digital divide. In most countries, it is necessary that engineers not only recognize code of ethics but also implement it in their professional work. (American Society of Civil Engineers, page 4-7)

Discussion

Coming down to the history it is essential to know when this phenomenon emerged and what are the recent developments. During the early nineteen century engineering as a field grew and this was the time when engineers saw themselves as themselves as professional that played a significant role in the success of the organization/ enterprise. Tension with respect to engineers not following their norms and regulations arose greatly. But even so at this time ethics in engineering were looked upon more as a concern that was more personal than professional.
