Introduction

French physicist Marie Sklodowska-Curie (born Maria Sklodowska) was born in Warsaw (Poland). Maria grew up in a family where science classes are respected. Her father taught physics in high school, and her mother until she contracted tuberculosis, was the director of the gymnasium. Maria's mother died when she was eleven years old.

Maria Curie brilliantly studied in primary and secondary schools. Even at a young age, she felt the fascination of science and worked as a laboratory assistant in the chemical laboratory of her cousin. The Great Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, the creator of the periodic table of chemical elements, was a friend of her father. After seeing a girl at work in the lab, he predicted a great future for her if she would continue her studies in chemistry. Having grown up at the Russian rule (Poland at that time was divided between Russia, Germany and Austria-Hungary), Curie took an active part in the movement of young intellectuals and anticlerical Polish nationalists. Although most of her life Curie spent in France, she always kept the dedication of the struggle for Polish independence.
