Abortion is voluntary pregnancy termination that results in the embryo or fetus' death. It is performed before the 3rd trimester which is legally allowed in the U.S, though the problem has polarized typical political environment. Almost all platforms of Democratic Party in all the states support legal status of abortion whereas almost all platforms of Republican Party in all the states oppose its legality (Lerner, 2002). Therefore it has become a significant issue in the United States. Democratic Party platforms and those who support the abortion argue that women should be given the right to access all healthcare needs and allowed to control her body according to her will. On the other hand, Republicans and those who oppose it argue that the fetus or embryo is “alive” and in abortion the fetus or embryo is killed therefore it is equivalent to murder.

This paper is written on “methods of abortion” due to the increasing trend and significance of this issue. This paper is aimed at highlighting the significance of the issues and the methods of abortion that how it is performed. In the contemporary world, the most widespread causes of abortion are: controlling birth, unwanted pregnancy, and inability to care or support a child, preventing the child birth with severe health problems or defects, pregnancy that results from incest or rape, and mental or physical conditions endangering the health of woman if she continues her pregnancy (Ferreira, Souza, Lima, & Braga, 2010).

Commonly used Methods of Abortion in Contemporary World

There are two basic methods for safe abortion: the medical and surgical methods that which method of abortion is best suitable because it is very important for women to choose the method best suited for her.

Medicated Methods

The medical abortion methods, as their name implies, use drugs that have characteristics to induce abortion rather than resorting to surgical methods of abortion. They are used in over 40 countries and have been approved by the WHO (World Health Organization), so that safe and effective abortion can be ensured. A method at the same time is discrete and represents many of the best ways to end pregnancy (Recent Developments on Partial-Birth Abortion, 2003).

In general, the advantages of using medicated abort methods are:

Avoid a surgical procedure and its implications: anesthesia, surgery, go to the operating room, etc.

It is less painful

It is a more natural process and the results are similar to menstruation.

It is emotionally easier for women.

Women can have more control over the process and participation.

The procedure can be performed in the privacy at home.

The efficiency is nearly 100%.

Can be used by virtually all women.

The methods of medication abortion are basically ingesting pills in a span of 48 hours, the result is a slightly higher, bleeding of menstruation and thus the matrix evacuate their internal content. The gestation period is required is up to 63 days from the start of the last menstrual period, or 9 weeks after the last menstrual period.
