Abstract

NFC is a new technology that allows users to pay with their phones by making them forget about money cash and credit cards. This research is based on exploring different aspects of this innovative technology and its impacts on the market. This research will be further expande by providing a comparison between NFC and other similar technologies

NFC - Near Field Communication

Introduction

NFC stands for Near Field Communication (developed by Philips, Nokia and Sony), is a networking technology, radio frequency that allows bidirectional communication between electronic devices in short-range and therefore only works at close range, up to a maximum of 10 centimeters. The most recent trend within RFID is its implementation in more advanced technologies substituting magnetic cards and electronic key cards. The interesting fact is that the technology can be integrated into the SIM card, thus allowing telecom operators to enter the NFC services directly on the card. To make payments, users need a smartphone with NFC chip and the integration of credit card (or prepaid cards) on their mobile devices. To pay by mobile phone, therefore, serves on the one hand and on other smartphone designed a contactless POS also equipped with NFC chip. The two devices must be located at a distance of 4 cm so that the transaction can be performed. Near Field Communication (NFC) is a technology based on the set of standards for smart phones and other similar devices for developing radio communication with each other by bringing them close mostly at a distance of few centimeters or by touching them together (Rolf and Nilsson, 2006).

The similar technologies to NFC are radio communications include Bluetooth of a frequency range from 2400 to 2480 MHz. ZigBee is a comparatively simpler and cheaper technology from other other WPANs (Wireless Personal Area Networks) like Bluetooth. WiFi is highly implemented in 802.11b standard. FeliCa refers to a contactless smart card system which is basically used in electronic money cards. MIFARE is the name given to NXP which is a semiconductors-owned trademark of a series of chips that is highly implemented in proximity cards and contactless smart cards (Jackson, and Riordan, 2013).

It transfers data up to 424 Kbits/second.

It conducts two way communications (read and write).

It is specifically designed wireless communication of short distances.

Line of sight is no required in NFC.

It performs in dirty environment.

An easy and simple connection is offered by NFC.

It offers an effective communication method for non -self powered devices (Jackson, and Riordan, 2013).
