“Of Mice and Men”

Introduction

The novel, which takes location throughout the Great Depression, starts adjacent the Salinas River beside Soledad, California, where two migrant employees, Lennie Small and George Milton, are strolling on their way to a close by ranch. They have lately got away from a ranch beside Weed where Lennie, a brain deficient yet mild man, was incorrectly suspect of rape when he affected a woman to seem her supple dress.

Analysis

As they stroll along, George scolds Lennie for playing with a dead mouse and alerts him not to talk when they reach at their new location of employment. When Lennie deplores about not having ketchup for the beans they consume for evening serving of food, George becomes furious, telling Lennie that he would be better off if he didn't have to be careful of him. After they make up, George does again to Lennie the minutia of their illusion - that he and Lennie will lift sufficient cash to purchase a patch of land, where they will have a little ranch with a vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch. The rabbit hutch is the only minutia of the design that Lennie consistently remembers. George notifies Lennie that, if he gets into problem as he did in Weed, he should come back to the brush beside the stream and delay for George to find him (George, pp 45-372).

When George and Lennie come to the bunkhouse at the ranch where they will work, an vintage man entitled Candy displays them their beds and notifies them that the overseer was furious that they didn't display up the evening before. Soon, the Boss inquiries George and Lennie (Hadella, pp 23-111).
