Introduction

This is the portfolio of a nurse who is in the first year of study. The portfolio will throw light on the values of the nurse which shape his experience of nursing. The portfolio will also include the nurse's beliefs about nursing which help him in pursuing the career of nurse. The learning plans will also be included in the paper. The course objectives of the curriculum being studied in the semester and areas of growth and focus is also discussed. The paper will also throw light on the evidence of achievement of the goals, pictures, quotations, peer evaluations that demonstrate the competency, exemplars from theory, seminar or labs. A reflection on feedback received and challenges experienced will be given in the paper. A presentation of goals for the next semester will also be presented in the paper. All of these things will be linked to the clinical evaluation in the course of becoming a nurse.

Values

Values can be defined in many different ways. The most basic definition of values is a collection of the ideals and beliefs that are shared by the members of a culture, a community or a society. Values differentiate between what is good and what is bad within its frame of reference. Values are one of the most important factors to influence the behavior and attitude of a person. They also serve as a guideline in different circumstances and situations (www.businessdictionary.com).

The value which shapes my nursing career the most is caring. The value of caring cannot be neglected in any field and profession of life. The importance of caring about each other in ones personal life is also something that cannot be negated. I have been one of the mist caring persons in my family, as well as, in all of my neighborhood. The characteristic of being caring is one of the most fundamental things that need to be present in a person who is opting to be a nurse. Being a nurse is synonymous to being a caring person. Nursing is a humanitarian service which cannot be accomplished without the gestures of caring and looking after the patients (Vance, 2009). It is the duty of a nurse to take care of the physical, as well as, the social and emotional needs of a patient. A nurse needs to look after the patients in a way that makes them feel human and better. Caring is the value that must be present in a nurse to make the patient feel better. A nurse not only needs to show care towards the patients, but also towards the family of patients to make them feel better. Caring is not something that can be put into words, it is rather something that can only be felt if done well.
