The New Testament uses more exquisite Greek, but it was the Greek spoken as a lingua franca of the Mediterranean world. The tradition of Moses' authorship of the Pentateuch among medieval scholars remained unchallenged until the Wellhausen hypothesis. In the first half of the twentieth century, the science of biblical archeology, developed by William F. Albright and his followers, combined with new methods of study such as source criticism and tradition history, developed by Hermann Gunkel, Robert Alter and Martin North, seem to show that the stories of Genesis based on oral traditions second millennium BC.
