Reaction Paper on Community Service

Introduction

Humanity has evolved over time, and so have the society, of which humans are an integral part. The world has come far from the time of monarchists, to a time where democracy is a prevalent ideology. It is part of democratic processes and a democratic system that makes each person responsible for the well-being of the society in which he or she exists. The well-being of a society is important in order to keep a balance. This balance is achieved, when no members want of basic necessities. Therefore, just as each person needs to be taken care of and nurtured- the society, too, needs be nourished and nurtured.

Community service is a part of this giving back and is important for the growth and maintenance of the society, and at large for humanity as more people continue to be a part of it. According to some researchers, participating in community service is a unique form of learning. Service learning, as it is called, aims at helping students to develop social skills and ethical values by putting them face-to face with real-life problems and issues.Service learning aims to develop a sense of responsibility among students from a inexperienced age so that they understand what it feels like to contribute to society.

Therefore, while community services is a means to evoke altruism and is a means of giving back to the society, service-learning is part of a curriculum, and while it does serve the purpose of giving back tothe community, it is also meant to help students learn the value of helping someone out in need.

Community service also works as a gentle reminder to the participants that they, as members of society, have a responsibility towards their community. Being part of community service also enables participants to form links with organizations, so that wherever they are in life, they will know exactly how to go about contributing. These links are very important because more often than not, people want to contribute, but either they do not know how to go about it, or they do not know the way in which they can help.

Community service is an important part of an individual's development and considering this I volunteered at a community service organization called the Capital Area Food Bank. The mission of the organization is to provide food to those who have no means to afford it. The region that the organization is currently covering through its activities is the Washington metropolitan area.

The program revolves around feeding people in need, and endeavours to enlighten and empower the community so that its members ...
