Introduction

Valerio who is now 46 years old, has always been a smart kid. Very healthy since almost twenty years. He attended the Art Institute. Painted in any appreciable way, as can still do when he wants to. After graduating with good grades, he enrolled in a university faculty of the peninsula, and was going to stay in a boarding school. And it is precisely here that soon after the first difficulties arose. The rector, the person who knew one day he called us on the phone saying: "You should come soon: Valerio behaves in a strange way, it is not the same, do inexplicable things." Valerio was no longer the boy who had known until a few months ago. He interrupted his studies. A physician was consulted who led us to a specialist. The diagnosis of schizophrenia accompanied by paranoia, which then led him to see conspiracies everywhere and by everyone, it was immediately clear. It is a mental state followed by cyclical and recurrent periods of religious exaltation. Valerio, in substance, believed to be the Lord's anointed. He felt as he was chosen by God for a mission of salvation among men. So think of Jesus as being persecuted and having to undergo a kind of martyrdom. It was not easy to accept this verdict ruthless, relentless. It was not for me or for my parents nor my sisters. However, we have tried to make us strong. But treatments have not proved equal to the seriousness of his condition. At first it seemed that his situation has been greatly underestimated. And many doctors did not help us. Some have proved incompetent. Others have suggested remedies scarcely practicable. Others do not have hidden cynicism and indifference to his case, certainly one of the many, for them.

Meanwhile Valerio was judged incapable of discernment, exempt from military service, subsequently declared hundred percent invalid civil. In addition to the board at the end he was awarded a carer: how families perceive us because we are just us who are concerned for him full-time. The initial period of the illness was painful, to say the least. Valerio has gone from a shelter to another, always in psychiatric wards island. Meanwhile, he changed completely the way of life.
