Health Promotion: Primary Level

This article, Prevention of urinary tract infections in nursing homes: lack of evidence-based prescription? is written by the authors Jenny Bergman, Jan Schjøtt and Hege S Blix. This article discusses the concept of health promotion in terms of the requirement of further evidence based practices. The article provides the information regarding health promotion and defines the concept as a process to let people have an enhanced control and strength over the determinants of health in order to improve it. It mentions that the urinary tract infections (UTIs) comprises of the lower and upper symptomatic UTIs mostly in the elder people. The most common element is the asymptomatic bacteriuria and the majority of people mention that it should not be subject to treatment. In order to promote the health care concept amongst people, the guidelines have been developed for diagnosing the treatment procedures and criteria of UTIs. The article also mentions the studies depicting a huge proportion of the usage of antibacterial in nursing homes which is likely to be unsuitable, thus, leaving behind the concept of health promotion.

In nursing the health promotion plays vital role in the managed care department. However, its absence and the lack of documentation of effectiveness of the prescribing agents are troublesome, and are likely to represent tremendous international problem as treatment of recurrent UTIs. These are the current challenges that are being faced in the capacity of health promotion. It is founded by the current study that there should be a frequent utilization of the recommended agents such as nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim, and vaginal estrogens. However, it has been seen that there has been a high dominance of vitamin C, methylamine, cranberry products, and systemic estrogens instead thus weakling the health promotions amongst the patients or client. It was also concluded by the discussion and statistical research that the prescription of the prophylactic agents for UTIs is not evidence-based in nursing homes in accordance with the current national guidelines and the literature review. The older women specially use the recurrent UTIs and there are a higher proportion of residents that are using the prophylaxis in the study contrary to the expectations. It has been suggested that the health promotion concept should be implemented through making the generalization from the prevalence studies and the quality improvement projects must be defined in all those intuitions that possess the control systems which are least developed (Jenny, Jan, and Hege, 2011).
