Being proactive refers to how an individual may deal with a problem and how quick an individual may get over it. In an ideal world, it would also refer to how willing individuals may be towards helping others through similar problems, but in the case of Covey, the term relates more towards the organizational aim to fulfill company goals and to be creative towards looking toward the future. Failing to be proactive is related to several factors according to the author. Some people believe it is not in their nature to construct a proactive personality, or that their genetic code disallows them to perform their life's activities in a proactive manner. However, for one to live a peaceful and satisfied existence, forming their own self respect is vital and therefore, misfortune does not affect them in the same manner as it would to someone anticipating failure. Being proactive means living by ones own values and not base them on the reactions of others. This is extremely important in terms of an organizational environment.

This habit is based on how imaginative an individual may be. It allows individuals to envision in their minds what cannot be done presently. It is a clear representation of how there may be a practice run first with projects, regardless of whether they are personal or professional. After the end result is decided upon, an individual may be able to formulate a better plan towards reaching their destination; an easier route per se. The first stage is merely the mental creation while the second, final stage is the physical creation of goals. If an individual fails at making a conscious attempt at realizing what it is they require from life and what they hope to achieve at the end of their developmental process, they may give other people the power to rule their life and they would not be able to form a personality of their own. A strong individual would be able to formulate their own personal morals, and ethical guidelines without the help of others.
