These are the words of Benjamin Franklin. Franklin was of the opinion that the process of improvement that generates positive change to achieve growth is the real characteristic of being a genius. According to Franklin improvement is a process, not just a product such as achieving a goal or passing on to a destination. As a young man, Franklin believed himself to be highly skilled in argument. He developed the habit of only ever expressing himself in terms of modest diffidence, never saying words like undoubtedly or trying to correct people. Instead, he used measured phrases such as it appears to me... or if I am not mistaken... The result was that, people focused on his ideas and he quickly gained credibility. With the aid of his qualities of winning arguments, ability to persuade people, effective communication skills, discipline and the organization, he brought improvement in the lives of many people (Franklin 2003, 22).

Franklin's story as an illustration of self-improvement

Franklin used to think that he faces trouble in building relationships with people, and it takes blood, sweat and tears to get introduced in an unfamiliar environment. He always thought he was shy, but the truth is that he frequently interacts with people fairly quickly. Franklin says that “When I finished my studies and left the bubble to face the real world, I finally discovered that I am socially incapable. I realized that my social life is practically nothing; I agree that this problem should be resolved. So now I have to solve my problem starting with the language issue, both verbal and nonverbal, as well as the strain of new environments (Franklin 2003, 18).
