Three Distinct Aspects of Love

Based on previous studies, Robert Sternberg proposed a theory of the love triangle in 1986. The root of this theory is based on three elements: intimacy, passion, and commitment. The intimacy is characterized by emotional support and trust. Passion is characterized by a state of emotional and physiological activation. This includes physical and sexual attraction. Commitments include a decision to love each other and maintain that love. Using various combinations of these three elements, Sternberg described the eight different kinds of love: dislike (does not have all three factors), sympathy (expressed only by intimacy), crazy love (passion only), empty love (commitment only), romance (intimacy factors and passion), friendly love (the intimacy and commitment), and silly love (passion and commitment), and a complete love (all three factors are expressed).

In Western society, the love between two individuals exists principally due to passion and intimacy. These factors are highlighted by a desire to support each other in times of problems and frustration. These inclinations are also due to a physical and emotional passion. In societies where there are arranged marriages, people are more stimulated towards long-term commitment. This attitude is delineated because the two individuals do not know each other and the sole desire behind them meeting and marrying is a commitment for living their whole life with each other.
