Aircraft Accident

Introduction

An accident which occurs due to any problem with the aircraft or aviation related matters is known as aircraft accident. With respect to the Convention on International Civil Aviation Annex 13, it is an accident that happens during the time an individual boards the plane till that person has landed and in which the concern individual has come across severe injury or death and the aircraft suffers failure or damage or is completely missing or is inaccessible. If the aircraft suffers a damage that needs to be written off or the one in which the aircraft is destroyed is known as hull loss accident(AirSafe.com).

The safety of Aircraft or the generally known term Aviation safety has evolved greatly in the past century of implementation. In the present times there is a great emphasis on the safety rules and guidelines of aircrafts, with safety turning out to be one of the major selling points and safety hazards (potential or otherwise) can be a threat to the survival of the organization in the world. At present the safety application needed in the commercial aircrafts include: the evacuation slides to aid the passengers in a swift and sure exit from the aircraft in case of any emergency, turbine engines for the avoiding the failure and increase durability, advanced avionics which is the computerized alert system and auto recovery and the landing gear that can be lowered even when the other functions are not working.

Discussion

Case history

The subject case taken as a study of the aircraft accidents occurred on July 31, 2008 at around 09:45 am in full day light. The East Coast Jets flight 81, a Hawker Beachcraft Corporation 125-800A airplane, N818MV, crashed while attempting to go around after landing on runway 30 at Owatonna Degner Regional Airport, Owatonna, Minnesota. There were total 8 casualties; who included two pilots and six passengers were killed. In the accident the airplane in question was destroyed as a result of the impact. The subject domestic flight was nonscheduled and was functioning under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135 (www.ntsb.gov).

Causes of the Accident

There was an instrument flight principle flight plan which has been categorized and activated; however, the same was disregarded before the aircraft was landing. At the time of the accident the visual meteorological circumstances existed. The most applicable causes of the accident were the decision of the flight captain to attempt to go around which was attempted late in the landing process and there was not sufficient run way left to try such a thing. This was the basic analysis by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The things which were an added factor to the causes of accident were the inability of pilot to manage crew, poor coordination and a serious lack of discipline in the cockpit. Moreover, what added more to it was the fatigue of the pilot's which resulted in poor performance and affected their decision making and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) failure to oblige the crew members ...
